Jack Clinton, D.M.D., former Dean of the OHSU School of Dentistry, details his life and work in the field of dentistry and dental education. He begins the interview by describing his childhood in Lakeview, Oregon, his early interest in the field of dentistry as a child, and meeting Mary, the woman who would later become his wife. Clinton goes on to describe his early work experience, taking on an assortment of jobs as a teenager. He goes on to discuss his undergraduate and graduate education, earning a B.S. in pre-dental science and general science at the University of Oregon, followed by his D.M.D. at the University of Oregon Dental School. Clinton describes how he came to be on the faculty at the UODS (now the OHSU School of Dentistry) shortly after graduation, mentioning notable figures of the school, Drs. Kenny Cantwell and Louis Terkla. Clinton describes teaching in the dental school clinic as well as his role in the evolution of the dental school curriculum, involvement with the dental hygiene program, Admissions Committee, and the Dental Careers Institute. Clinton also discusses the integration of new technologies at the dental school, the challenges and successes of serving as Dean of the School of Dentistry, the development of the dental school at the South Waterfront, and his vision for the future of the school and of the field of dentistry. The interview concludes with a reflection on his 50 years of service to the dental school and the honor of receiving the Alumnus of the Year Award in 2001.
